Wolf

Wolf (1994)
Seen on VHS 15th July 2008

Was Jack Nicholson ever NOT old ??

This movie opens on the ridiculous premise that people aren't scare dof Jack Nicholson to begin with, and frankly that makes me laugh. A vaguely entertaining not-at-all scary (except for the implied Nicholson Pfeiffer sex scene) horror/thriller.

STORY: 4/7 - (grrr)
A man is driving at night and accidently hits a dog, WAIT! No, it's a wolf. Wolf bites man, man is suddenly stronger, faster, has better vision, better hearing and is generally now awesome. How could anything go wrong? Maybe a second wolfman? It's a slightly more intellectual werewolf movie; The werewolf as a metaphor.

ACTING: 3/7 - (meh)
Average. Nothing special - nothing bad.

CINEMATOGRAPHY / VISUAL EFFECTS: 3/7 - (*hoooooowl*)
Some really nice looking scenes, but the majority of the movie just looks mediocre. The false teeth worn by Nicholson are nothing short of HILARIOUS, but the wolves are CUTE CUTE CUTE!

SCORE / SOUND: 5/7 - (Ennio Morricone)
Morricone is quite good at what he does! The majority of this score is soothing and/or eerie, with a percussive tension building, but it sometimes falls into the old horror movie traps. Piercing screechy wails from the high winds which aren't intelligent or entertaining.

SONGS: N/A

and because this is a HORROR movie...
THE GORE RATING: Sad!
There was some pretty gross neck-snapping of a deer and some severred fingers... but it was generally lacking.

OVERALL RATING: 3.5/7 - (Groooowl)

interesting facts -
- Hey! it's that brother from Frasier!
- Hey! it's Ron Rofkin from Alias!
- When they were at Pfeiffer's house eating PB+J it was CRUNCHY peanut butter and that makes me feel sick!
- David Schwimmer played the cop at the zoo!
